52 Faces of Mt View (2010)
Permanent public sculpture commissioned by the Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska. 2010.
Steel, fiberglass, LEDs. (8 ft x 20 ft x 2 in)
To create this piece, Erin Pollock & Steph Kese spent a year getting to know community members in a neighborhood that was, at the time, the most diverse in America (US Census 2010). They made molds of the faces of people who lived within 1 mile of the sculpture site and used those to create 52 fiberglass lamps.
At dusk, the faces light up and their shared glow brightens an otherwise dark corner. In December, the sculpture is lit for 20+ hours a day.
Participants ranged in age from 5-80. After the kids helped unveil the sculpture, everyone celebrated together with a neighborhood potluck that featured performances by members of the community.
